Cryo-Electron Microscopy Imaging and 3-D Reconstruction of Transduction Complexes"

Two  Structures of Membrane-Protein Complexes that Mediate Signal Transduction
in Vertebrate  Photoreceptors   Have Been  Studied:

                                                           (1) Electron  Crystallography and  helical reconstruction  of
"Helical  arrays  of   the  photoreceptor G protein transducin, Gt, bound to
tubular  lipid  bilayers ( "Gt Tubes")"

                                                          (2) Single   Particle  Analysis  of   randomly  oriented  photoreceptor  cGMP
                                                                                             phosphodiesterase  PDE6.

            Signal Transduction Complexes

G protein-coupled  receptors are the largest class of   receptors in humans, and in eukaryotic organisms in general
(Bourne, 1997).  Pathways involving  G proteins are  the targets  of most  drugs  used for  therapeutic purposes, as well
as for most of those used legally  or illegally  for non-therapeutic  reasons.
